Artemis Fowl and the Lost Colony is the fifth book in the Artemis Fowl series.  It was written by Eoin Colfer and published by Puffin Books in 2006.  The novel had a split release between Ireland and the United Kingdom and the United States.  A fairy code was written at the end of the book.  It can be used as a cipher to decrypt previous messages.  Artemis Fowl and the Lost Colony was well received by the critics.  The story continues the adventures of the boy mastermind after the conclusion of Artemis Fowl and the Opal Deception

Butler and Artemis are waiting for a demon in Barcelona, Spain.  The monster materializes and teleports young fowl through space and time.  His bodyguard intervenes before he is lost in the continuum.  Fowl is safe.  Lower Elements Police wing commander Raine Vinyáya summons Mulch Diggums and Holly Short.  The duo is working as private investigators.  They are introduced to a secret group called Section Eight.

The organization divulges their clandestine responsibility of monitoring the demon world.  The island of Hybras appeared after the battle of Tailte through the power of demon warlocks.  Their goal was to return to the human world.  They failed and the demons are now struck.  Sometimes they briefly show up on Earth through a strong connection with the Moon.  Foaly confesses that Artemis was able to predict the occurrences when Section Eight could not.  Holly is tasked with learning Fowl’s methods.

Artemis Fowl and the Lost Colony shifts to the…lost colony.  Hybras is stuck in permanent limbo.  The concept of time does not apply.  An imp named N°1 is one of the settlement’s last warlocks.  He is a gentle one and has no desire to wreak havoc on Earth.  The other demons tease him for his nature and because he has not warped (morph into a mature demon).  Leon Abbot is the leader and convinces N°1 to jump into a volcano and reach the human planet.

Holly, Artemis and Butler are staking out an opera house.  The gang notices a blonde girl that they spotted in Barcelona.  Her name is Minerva Paradizo.  N°1 appears onto the dark stage.  Billy Kong shoots the demon with a tranquilizer dart.  Kong is a mercenary and works for Minerva.  Paradizo leaves with the victim.  The good guys split.  Holly tracks Minerva back to France.  Butler and Artemis enlist Mulch Diggums and a pixie named Doodah Day.

N°1 learns about Paradizo’s schemes and plan to make a demon zoo.  He hears that Leon Abbot visited earlier.  Holly is captured eavesdropping.  Artemis and company sabotage the security system of Minerva’s villa.  The boy distracts the blonde and Holly escapes with the demon.  Paradizo regathers her thoughts.  Billy Kong goes rogue.  Big K is fixated on destroying the demons to avenge his brother’s death.  He takes over the security system and demands that Minerva gathers another demon.  She cannot.  She is taken hostage.

Artemis rolls through and offers to trade N°1 for Minerva at the Taipei World Financial Center (Taipei 101) in Taiwan.  Billy prepares to plant a bomb on the demon during the switch.  Time passes and N°1 is freed.  Kong is furious.  The good guys go to an art gallery.  Everyone walks to a sculpture of warlock demons.  Butler battles Billy’s gang.  N°1 revives a demon from the artwork.  His name is Qwan.

Minerva enters and Butler saves her.  The bomb gets attached to Holly in the scuffle.  She flies Qwan, Artemis and N°1 to the building next door.  Her stamina runs out and everyone tumbles.  Artemis removes N°1’s bracelet and they appear in Hybras.  Qwan says that they can reverse the time spell on the Lost Colony with five magical beings.  They are missing two.  Artemis reveals that he has stolen magic.  They are missing one.

Butler and Minerva turn Billy Kong over to the police.  Leon Abbot confronts the new arrivals.  They accuse him of pilfering magic.  The demon took it from Qwan’s apprentice.  All five beings are present.  Abbot launches an attack.  The demon army strikes.  Holly is killed.  Artemis uses his brain power and the advantage of the irregularity of time to revive her.  A magic circle is casted.  Abbot’s unconscious presence is not enough.  Qweffor the missing apprentice arrives.  The demon’s magic is enough and Holly and Artemis return to Earth.

They find themselves three years into the future.  Artemis notices that one of his eyes switched with Holly.  Butler has a beard and talks about Minerva, who can’t stop talking about Fowl.  Mulch Diggums and Doodah Day have grown Holly’s PI firm.  Ark Sool is fired for suggesting that the demons should be eliminated.  The boy learns that he has twin brothers named Myles and Beckett Fowl.  Oh, the places they will go!  Artemis Fowl and the Lost Colony ends.
