Artemis Fowl and the Atlantis Complex

Artemis Fowl, suffering from the Atlantis Complex, unveils a plan to combat global warming but displays extreme OCD tendencies. As his paranoia grows, he endangers himself and others. With the help of allies, including his sister and fairy friends, Artemis ultimately confronts his condition and seeks treatment in an underwater hospital, finding the strength to move forward.

Artemis Fowl and the Atlantis Complex is the seventh and penultimate novel in the Artemis Fowl series.  The American title is Artemis Fowl: The Atlantis Complex.  It was written by Eoin Colfer and published by Hachette Books (Hyperion) in the Summer of 2010.  The story follows the boy genius after the events of the Time Paradox.

Artemis Fowl heads to Iceland to meet with Foaly, Captain Holly Short and Vinyaya.  He unveils a new world saving invention called the Ice Cube. The creation is a nanofiber flake that will serve as pseudo snow capable of coating the icebergs.  The reflective layer will prevent them from melting and end the threat of global warming.  Baby it’s about to be cold outside.

Foaly and Holly notice that something is off during their friend’s presentation.  Fowl displays extreme obsessive-compulsive tendencies.  The pair diagnose him with the Atlantis Complex.  The disease is a mental condition found in criminals.  The symptoms include OCD, dissociative identify disorder and paranoia.  Artemis starts to force his existence around the number five.  He begins to form sentences in augmentations of five and avoids the number four altogether.

The demonstration continues.  A Lower Elements Police space probe appears.  Foaly confirms its authenticity.  Fowl’s paranoia increases.  The probe crashes into the LEP backup shuttle.  Vinyaya perishes attempting to saver her crew.  Holly and Foaly escape.  Artemis stands petrified and prepares to face his delusions.  Holly screams that the incoming probe is real and to move.  The boy ignores her.  Holly shoots the ground near his feet.  The boy moves and is safe.

Butler receives a troublesome text from his sister Juliet and heads to Cancun.  The text was a fake and sent by Artemis.  His mistrust has stretched to his closest allies.  The siblings embrace.  Juliet is now a wrestler called Jade Princess.  JP and Butler talk.  A fairy appears on the big screen and puts a spell on the wrestling fans.  They attack.  Butler counters their aggression.  Juliet disables the communications.  Everyone returns to normal.

The victory is brief.  Several dangerous dwarves attack.  The dwarves were hired by Julius Root’s brother Turnball.  Their mission is to wipe the sibling’s minds of fairy knowledge and anything supernatural.  The pair are saved by their old friend Mulch Diggums.  He is traveling under the cognomen Tombstone.  Butler whistles and thinks the nickname is awesome.  The brother and sister retain their intelligence.  The three are unharmed.

Artemis is acting strange.  His personality is taken over by his alter ego Orion Fowl.  Big O is happy and optimistic.  He expresses his love for Holly and refers to Foaly as a noble steed.  The centaur is displeased and warns Artemis to stop horsing around.  Orion continues to frolic about oblivious to his surroundings.  He is uncapable of forming a plan.  Fowl’s greatest asset is absent in Orion when they need it the most.

The good guys find and board an escape shuttle.  They follow the probe.  It is drilling into the ice above the Lower Elements city Atlantis.  The shuttle’s oxygen tank ruptures.  Holly knocks her friends out to conserve the sweet, sweet oxygen.  The blow causes Orion to revert back to Artemis.  Commander Kelp communicates with the shuttle.  He warns them to retract their investigation, but implies otherwise.  JP, Butler and Tombstone link up with the others.

The six follow Turnball’s trail.  He is in Venice and trying to make his human wife young again.  Fowl has to fight a giant squid and finds a computer core.  Their submarine continues on to Venice.  It is intercepted by Turnball.  He uses his control runes on Artemis and Holly to enslave them.

N°1 is healing the injured in Atlantis.  Turnball Root has Holly deceive her demon warlock buddy.  She leads him to an ambulance ship to help Artemis.  Fights break out after Mulch Diggums saves the captured.  The battle goes south when Butler and Juliet lose.  Foaly, Tombstone and an unconscious Artemis are all that remain.  Fowl is under Turnball’s rule, Orion is not.  He knocks out Holly and the villain loses his last ally.  He resorts to blowing up the ship.  His wife figures out his plan and tells him that she has had a nice life and doesn’t want to be young again.  Leonor grabs her husband for one last journey.  They travel deep into the ocean and the shuttle explodes.  Everyone escapes.

Artemis is still suffering from the Atlantis Complex.  N°1 helps the boy stay in control with his magic.  He heads to an underwater hospital to start therapy.  Juliet wrestles with one of the guards.  Foaly teases Holly about a date she had with Kelp.  Butler phones Mamma Fowl and informs her of her son’s affliction.  Angeline heads to meet them.  Artemis prepares for therapy and to let go of his guilt from the sins of his past.  Artemis Fowl and the Atlantis Complex ends.
